Understanding Dynamic Viscosity
Dynamic viscosity (μ or η), also known as absolute viscosity, is a measure of a fluid's internal resistance to flow. It is the tangential force per unit area required to move one horizontal plane with respect to another plane at a unit velocity when maintaining a unit distance separation between the two planes.
The SI unit for dynamic viscosity is the Pascal-second (Pa·s), which is equivalent to Newton-second per square meter (N·s/m²) or kilogram per meter-second (kg/(m·s)).
Substance | Viscosity (Pa·s) | Viscosity (cP) |
---|---|---|
Water | 0.001002 | 1.002 |
Air | 1.81 × 10-5 | 0.0181 |
Honey | 2 - 10 | 2000 - 10000 |
Olive Oil | 0.081 | 81 |
Glycerine | 1.412 | 1412 |
