Understanding Permeability

Permeability (k) is a measure of the ability of a porous material (often a rock or unconsolidated material) to allow fluids (gas or liquid) to pass through it. It is a property of the porous medium, not the fluid.

The SI unit for permeability is square meters (m²), although the darcy (D) and millidarcy (mD) are commonly used in the petroleum and hydrogeology fields.

Common Permeability Units
Unit Name Symbol Relation to m² (Approx.)
Square meter Base unit (1 m²)
Darcy D 0.986923 × 10-12
Millidarcy mD 0.986923 × 10-15
Square centimeter cm² 1 × 10-4
Square foot ft² 0.092903 m²
Square inch in² 0.00064516 m²
