About Acres

The acre is a unit of land area used in the imperial and US customary systems. It is traditionally defined as the area of one chain by one furlong (66 by 660 feet), which is exactly equal to 1/640 of a square mile, 43,560 square feet, or about 4,047 square meters.

The word "acre" derives from Old English "æcer" originally meaning "open field". Historically, an acre was understood as the amount of land tillable by one man behind one ox in one day. This varied considerably based on land quality and the plowman's efficiency. The statutory acre was later defined by acts of Parliament in England.

Acres are primarily used for:

• Measuring land, especially for farms, real estate plots, and large parcels.
• Forestry and agriculture.
• Land management and conservation.

While many countries have metricated, the acre is still commonly used in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, India, and other countries with a British colonial heritage.

The U.S. survey acre is based on the U.S. survey foot and is very slightly larger than the international acre (approximately 1.000004 international acres), but for most practical purposes, they are considered equivalent.

To help visualize an acre:

• An American football field, including end zones, is about 1.32 acres. Excluding end zones, it's about 1.1 acres.
• A standard FIFA soccer pitch is typically between 1.76 and 2.2 acres.
• A square that is approximately 208.71 feet (or 63.61 meters) on each side is one acre.
• About 16 tennis courts can fit into one acre.
