Understanding Permeability
Permeability (k) is a measure of the ability of a porous material (often a rock or unconsolidated material) to allow fluids (gas or liquid) to pass through it. It is a property of the porous medium, not the fluid.
The SI unit for permeability is square meters (m²), although the darcy (D) and millidarcy (mD) are commonly used in the petroleum and hydrogeology fields.
Unit Name | Symbol | Relation to m² (Approx.) |
---|---|---|
Square meter | m² | Base unit (1 m²) |
Darcy | D | 0.986923 × 10-12 m² |
Millidarcy | mD | 0.986923 × 10-15 m² |
Square centimeter | cm² | 1 × 10-4 m² |
Square foot | ft² | 0.092903 m² |
Square inch | in² | 0.00064516 m² |
