About Absorbed Dose Units

Absorbed dose is a measure of the energy deposited by ionizing radiation in a unit mass of matter. The SI unit for absorbed dose is the Gray (Gy).

  • Gray (Gy): $1 \text{ Gy} = 1$ joule/kilogram (J/kg).
    • Milligray (mGy): $1 \text{ mGy} = 10^{-3} \text{ Gy}$
    • Microgray (µGy): $1 \text{ µGy} = 10^{-6} \text{ Gy}$
    • Nanogray (nGy): $1 \text{ nGy} = 10^{-9} \text{ Gy}$
    • Picogray (pGy): $1 \text{ pGy} = 10^{-12} \text{ Gy}$
    • Femtogray (fGy): $1 \text{ fGy} = 10^{-15} \text{ Gy}$
    • Attogray (aGy): $1 \text{ aGy} = 10^{-18} \text{ Gy}$
  • Rad (rad): An older unit for absorbed dose. $1 \text{ rad} = 0.01 \text{ Gy}$.
    • Millirad (mrad): $1 \text{ mrad} = 10^{-3} \text{ rad} = 10^{-5} \text{ Gy}$.
  • Joule/kilogram (J/kg): Equivalent to Gray. $1 \text{ J/kg} = 1 \text{ Gy}$.
  • Joule/gram (J/g): $1 \text{ J/g} = 1000 \text{ J/kg} = 1000 \text{ Gy}$.
  • Joule/centigram (J/cg): $1 \text{ J/cg} = 100 \text{ J/g} = 100,000 \text{ Gy}$.
  • Joule/milligram (J/mg): $1 \text{ J/mg} = 1000 \text{ J/g} = 1,000,000 \text{ Gy}$.
  • Erg/gram (erg/g): $1 \text{ erg/g} = 10^{-4} \text{ J/kg} = 10^{-4} \text{ Gy}$. (Since $1 \text{ erg} = 10^{-7} \text{ J}$)
  • Roentgen equivalent physical (rep): As per unitconverters.net for absorbed dose, $1 \text{ rep} = 0.93 \text{ rad} = 0.0093 \text{ Gy}$.
