Understanding Surface Tension

Surface tension (γ or σ) is the elastic tendency of a fluid surface which makes it acquire the least surface area possible. It results from the greater attraction of liquid molecules to each other (due to cohesion) than to the molecules in the air (due to adhesion).

The SI unit for surface tension is Newton per meter (N/m), which is equivalent to Joules per square meter (J/m²).

Approximate Surface Tension of some liquids at 20°C (against air)
